Repairing and maintaining your home

What simple checks can i do before reporting a repair?

Use this quick guide before reporting a repair. Only carry out checks that are safe and simple. If there is any danger, report it as an emergency straight away.

Step

If the problem is...

Try this first, if safe

When to report

1

No power

Check the fuse box for tripped switches, reset if safe, and check whether there is a local power cut.

Report if power is still off, if only your home is affected, or if there are exposed wires, burning smells or sparks.

2

No heating or hot water

Check the boiler power supply, thermostat, timer settings and prepayment meter credit if you have one.

Report if heating or hot water is still not working, and tell us if anyone in the home may be particularly affected.

3

Water or drainage issue

For no water or low pressure, check the stop tap and ask neighbours if they are affected. For a blockage, try a plunger if safe.

Report if the problem continues, water is leaking, the toilet cannot be used, or there is flooding.

4

Damp, mould or condensation

Use extractor fans, keep vents clear, wipe condensation from surfaces and report any leaks quickly.

Report visible mould, water staining, leaks, a musty smell or condensation that does not improve.

5

Dangerous or urgent issue

Do not try to fix gas leaks, exposed electrics, serious flooding, unsafe structures or anything that could put people at risk.

Report immediately as an emergency.

Emergency advice: Do not attempt to fix anything that could put you or others at risk. Report emergencies immediately.
