Garden waste sign ups for 2026/2027 will close on September 30 2026. Any new sign ups received between now and the deadline will still be charged for the full year, and you will only receive the remaining collections between now and spring 2027. We recommend waiting until the sign up window opens in 2027 if you wish to receive this service.
Please note that the contracted service year runs from April to March so we always encourage signing up at the beginning of the service period to get the best value for money.
If you no longer want your brown bin please let us know using the end my garden waste subscription form and we will collect it free of charge.
If you wish to sign up for a friend or relative at a different address to your own, please register with a different email account for each address.
Current garden waste customers
Please follow the guidance below to help make sure your bin is collected:
- Put your bin out by 6am on your scheduled collection day.
- Present your bin kerbside, in an accessible position where our collection crews can safely access it.
- Your bin is clearly marked with your house number or house name so it can be identified.
- Make sure the lid is fully closed and the lid is down against the bin (plastic to plastic). Do not overfill your bin.
- Do not attach anything to your bin, including ropes, bungee cords, straps or chains, as these can become caught in the lifting equipment and create a safety risk.
- Do not present garden waste in plastic bags or bin liners.
- Your bin is not overloaded and loosen any compacted waste to stop it sticking in the bin
- We are unable to collect any side waste and cannot make any extra collections. Please bear this in mind when refilling your bin.
- Your bin is not contaminated with food, recycling or domestic household waste.
- Only put the correct materials in your bin for the type of collection. If incorrect or non-accepted items are found, your bin will be rejected and will not be emptied.
- Please remove your bin from the kerbside within 24 hours of it being emptied
- We no longer routinely place labels, tags or stickers on bins when a collection cannot be completed.
- If your bin has not been emptied, please report the missed collection within 48 hours using our Report a missed bin – Mansfield District Council service, or by email at mdc@mansfield.gov.uk or by contacting the Customer Services Team on 01623 463463. We can check the reason why your bin was not collected.
- If no issue is recorded and the collection was missed due to an error on our part, we will arrange for your bin to be emptied as soon as possible. Please leave your bin at the kerbside until it has been collected. We will return to empty it as soon as we can.
- If the bin was not collected because incorrect materials were found inside, or because the bin was not presented correctly or was not out on time, you will need to wait until your next scheduled collection.
- If you cannot wait until your next scheduled collection, you can arrange a paid off-schedule collection. Any incorrect or non-accepted materials must be removed from the bin before the collection can take place.
- If you arrange a paid off-schedule collection, your bin must remain presented kerbside until the collection has taken place.

Your collection day
This bin is emptied every fortnight. You can check your bin collection schedule using our bin day lookup.
Lost, stolen or damaged brown bins
If your brown bin has been damaged by the Council's collection vehicle or is no longer serviceable through normal wear and tear, we will replace it free of charge.
If your brown bin has been lost, stolen or damaged through misuse, a replacement charge will apply.

Missed collections
Our collection crews start work from 6am and can continue collecting until 2pm. Collection times can vary, so please do not report your bin as missed until after 2pm.
If your bin has not been emptied after 2pm, please report the missed collection within 2 working days.
You can report a missed collection using our Report a missed bin form Report a missed bin – Mansfield District Council, by email at mdc@mansfield.gov.uk or by contacting the Customer Services Team on 01623 463463.
We will investigate the missed collection and, where it is a genuine missed collection, we will normally return to empty the bin within 5 working days, subject to operational resources.
Once you have reported a missed collection, leave your bin presented kerbside until it has been emptied.
A missed collection will not be classed as genuine where:
- The bin was not out by 6am.
- The bin was not at the correct collection point.
- Access was not available.
- The bin contained incorrect or contaminated materials.
- The bin was too heavy or overfilled.
- The lid was not fully closed.
- The contents were stuck inside the bin.
If the collection was not due to Council error, you will normally need to wait until your next scheduled collection or arrange a paid return collection.
If your road is inaccessible
Sometimes collections can be affected by circumstances outside the Council's control, such as:
- Road closures
- Parked vehicles blocking access
- Severe weather
- Other access restrictions
Where it is safe and practical to do so, we will make further attempts to collect your bin.
During severe weather or other exceptional circumstances, please follow any collection updates provided on our website and social media channels.
Burning garden waste
We strongly discourage bonfires to get rid of your garden waste. Not only can bonfires cause unnecessary callouts for the Fire Service, smoke is also damaging to the environment and can be harmful for neighbours, who may also consider it to be antisocial behaviour.
