Update on the impact of Covid-19 on our front line

Along with many other local authorities and businesses, Mansfield District Council is experiencing challenges due to the increasing number of positive Covid-19 cases in our area

and the requirement for our staff to self-isolate. We know we are not alone in this ‘pingdemic’ situation and we hope this will improve in coming weeks, but the truth is, it is having an impact on our front line services especially Waste and Recycling.

We know this service is important to you and we would like to assure residents that we are prioritising our statutory duty to collect general household waste and recycling (green and blue bins).

The most affected service continues to be our garden waste collection and as such, our advice to our customers is to continue to put your brown bin out on your scheduled day and we will do all we can to collect it. If it is not emptied then please take it back in until the next collection day when we will collect up to three extra plastic bags per household of additional garden waste. The bags will be opened, emptied in to the back of the wagon and placed in the lid of the bin for customers to dispose of.

We anticipate that the disruption to the discretionary garden waste service is likely to continue until the middle of September, but please be assured we are doing all we can to maintain our front line services.

We are updating customers by email and text, where we hold these contact details, to let them know of any cancelled rounds that day. We try to issue this information as early as we can, but our crews will always do their best to empty as many bins as possible so sometimes we have to wait until they’ve finished their rounds to know what is unachievable. Depending on resources, we also aim to catch up as much as we can by emptying bins on Saturdays – these updates will be added to our social media feeds and website.

For the very latest information, please check the latest news page on our website and our social media feeds. We ask customers to only contact our Customer Services team if you are not able to get the information you need from this post or from our web section on waste and recycling.

The council will review the impact that Covid-19 has had on our paid-for service for the second year running and consider appropriate compensation for our customers.

We appreciate your patience and understanding along with the kind comments that we have received by email and on our social media feeds.

There are some things that customers can do to help us during this difficult time:

  • Sign up to receive bin alerts and the latest information to your inbox on our website (opens in new window) and select ‘bin alerts’
  • Take any excess garden waste to a local recycling centre if you are unable to wait until your next collection.
  • Consider mowing your lawn less frequently to reduce the amount of garden waste you produce
  • Try composting your garden waste to provide valuable nutrients for your garden

Find out more on what goes in your bin and how to recycle for Notts on our dedicated bins section (opens in new window).
