Two council properties in Mansfield have been closed after complaints of persistent nuisance and disorder connected to criminal activity including illegal drug use and distribution.
Mansfield District Council`s Anti-Social Behaviour and Enforcement Team secured three-month Closure Orders on the properties in Gladstone Street on 7 January 2026.
The action was taken to protect and prevent the exploitation of vulnerable people and bring peace and safety to the area while the council seeks to repossess the properties before the homes are re-let.
It was the first time the council has utilised these powers following the introduction of the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act.
Nottinghamshire Police has supported the Closure Order applications and will continue to work alongside the Housing Team to ensure the ongoing safety of residents.
Cllr Anne Callaghan, Portfolio Holder or Housing, said: “I am really pleased our housing officers have been able to use these powers. Anti-social behaviour in any form is treated very seriously by the council, and we urge anyone experiencing it to report it.
“Our officers felt it was better to go down the route of a Closure Order first, with the eventual aim of taking possession of the properties, because this allows local people to return to a safe and peaceful environment more quickly. I’m delighted that these homes are expected to be re-let in due course to families in urgent need on our waiting list.”
Jill Finnesey, the council’s Assistant Director of Housing, added: “Action of this nature is always a last resort for the council and is taken only after all other proposals of support have been offered. The council continues to offer guidance to anyone experiencing housing challenges.”
