Water safety
Why is Water Safety Important?
The water that comes out of your taps is regularly tested by the local water authority for quality, taste, and bacteria. Even though the water is treated, it doesn't eliminate all bacteria. Water and the pipes it travels through are complex, and sometimes bacteria can survive the normal disinfection process. Poor hygiene can sometimes lead to illnesses like Legionnaires' Disease.
What is Legionella?
Legionella is a type of bacteria that lives in water. If you breathe in water droplets containing this bacteria, it can cause Legionnaires' Disease, a serious lung infection similar to pneumonia. Legionella bacteria can be found in any water source, but it grows best in:
- Stagnant water
- Water temperatures between 20°C and 45°C
- Dirty water or equipment
People at higher risk for Legionnaires' Disease include:
- People over 50
- Those with respiratory diseases (like asthma)
- Smokers
- People with weakened immune systems
If you have an concerns regarding potential exposure to Legionella seek medical advice immediately. Advice may be sought by emailing watersafety@mansfield.gov.uk.
What Does Mansfield District Council Do to Keep You Safe?
Mansfield District Council (MDC) ensures that stored and shared water systems (tanks serving more than one dwelling) in its buildings are safe from Legionella bacteria by:
- Conducting risk assessments and monthly monitoring of water systems
- Hiring specialists to perform these assessments and monitoring
- Training staff to recognize and reduce Legionella risks
- Assessing water systems in sheltered housing due to the vulnerability of residents
- Flushing water systems in vacant properties before new residents move in
What Can You Do to Keep Safe?
- Clean your shower head, hose, and tap interiors every 3 months to prevent bacteria build-up.
- Run outdoor taps for 2 minutes each week to avoid stagnant water.
- If you've been away, run your taps and flush your toilet to clear the water system when you return.
- Don’t connect hoses or jet washers to water butts.
- Call MDC immediately at 01623 463463 if your water temperature seems incorrect.
Loss of Water
If you lose water in your home, report it to 01623 463463. We will investigate and, if necessary, provide bottled water until the issue is resolved. If your water supply is turned off, ensure all taps are off to prevent flooding when the supply resumes.
Leaking Pipes
To report a leak or burst pipe, call 01623 463463 immediately and take steps to prevent water damage:
- Turn off the water at the main stopcock and any gate valves from the water tank.
- Run all taps to drain the system.
- Turn off any water heaters.
- If water affects electrical items or wiring, turn off the electricity at the mains but don't touch the wet items.
- If water is bulging your ceiling, place a bucket underneath and pierce the bulge to let the water through.
