Busy first week for Mansfield's Mayor

Elected Mayor of Mansfield Andy Abrahams has had a busy first week in office and has already started the ball rolling on all his manifesto pledges.

Read what he's been up to so far...

"The very first thing I did was start work on setting up a fund so I can donate 30% of my Mayoral allowance for the benefit of the local community. Details are being finalised but community organisations will soon be able to bid for grants of up to £500. I hope this will act as a catalyst and encourage others to match the funding.

"My first official engagement as Mayor was to present an award at the Mansfield and Ashfield 2020 Business Awards on Friday night - congratulations to all the winners and finalists.

"The district has a good track record of having an entrepreneurial spirit and the business awards remind you where you could end up if you take the plunge and put a business idea into action. There is already lots of advice and support available from the council through Invest Ashfield and Mansfield to help you every step of the way. So if you've got an idea don't be afraid to come forward with it.

"On Saturday night, I attended a fundraiser for the Beacon Project, where I have been a volunteer for almost two years. It raised more than £7,000 for the project - which is fantastic. Although there is a lot of partnership working going on in the district to support homeless people and those who are struggling, I'd like to help the various organisations to work together even more closely.

"The annual Mansfield Music and Drama Festival concert at Mansfield Palace Theatre on Sunday brought back memories of my own participation while at Ladybrook Junior School, and most recently of watching my now grown-up children take part. It was great to go back and see the talent on show.

"Finally, although we are all so disappointed that the Stags didn't make the play-off final at Wembley, the club and fans need to remember how far they've come since last season. They have built the foundation to go even further next season."
