Kate Allsop, the first female Mayor of Mansfield, has sadly passed away following a long illness.

Tributes have been paid to the former Mayor, who made a lasting impact on the town during her time in office.

Elected in 2015, Kate served as Mayor for four years until 2019. During her tenure, she was instrumental in driving forward major regeneration projects, championing growth in the region and working with local government and national government to raise the profile of Mansfield.

Kate began her public service as a Mansfield District Councillor in 1991, serving as the ward member for Oakham Ward and Berry Hill as well as being elected as a Nottinghamshire County Councillor in 2001. She served as a Portfolio Holder for Regeneration before being elected Mayor in 2015. She was passionate about promoting Mansfield and celebrating its community spirit. Under her tenure, the town centre market was remodelled with new stalls, and she championed events supporting the Armed Forces.

One of her most notable achievements was securing the future of Berry Hill Park. When the park faced closure due to financial difficulties, Kate led efforts for the council to take ownership of the park, ensuring it remained a flagship green space that continues to be enjoyed by thousands of residents.

She also introduced the Mayor’s Commendations, an initiative that continues today under Mayor Andy Abrahams, recognising local heroes who go above and beyond for their community.

As a mark of respect, the Council’s flag will be flown at half-mast on the day of Kate Allsop’s funeral, and a minute’s silence will be observed at the next Full Council meeting.

James Biddestone, Chief Executive of Mansfield District Council said:

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Kate Allsop. On behalf of everyone at Mansfield District Council, I would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to her family. Kate made an outstanding contribution to this council, and I know many officers will remember her fondly from her time as Mayor.”

The Mayor of Mansfield, Andy Abrahams, paid tribute to Kate, saying:

“Everyone at Mansfield District Council is deeply saddened by the passing of Kate Allsop, the first female Mayor of Mansfield. Kate was an incredible champion for our town and devoted herself to improving the lives of the residents she served. On behalf of the people of Mansfield, I extend my heartfelt condolences to her family and loved ones. They can be immensely proud of the legacy Kate leaves behind.”
