Mansfield District Council and Citizens Advice North Nottinghamshire partner to support private renters

A new partnership between Mansfield District Council and Citizens Advice North Nottinghamshire has been launched this week to support people renting from private landlords to improve housing conditions in the area.

The partnership will offer private renters the opportunity to visit the Citizens Advice housing team at a weekly Wednesday dedicated drop-in session at Mansfield Civic Centre between the hours of 9.30am and 2pm.

The housing service offers expert advice on tenants’ rights with issues such as landlord disputes, repairs, finances and more. The new service can also help private renters to understand selective licensing and the new Renters Rights Bill, due to become law in autumn 2025.

Jill Finnesey, Assistant Director of Housing at Mansfield District Council, said: “Our partnership with the Citizen’s Advice North Nottinghamshire is all about helping private renters in the district to have a greater understanding of their rights as we get ready for the Renters Rights Bill.

“If private tenants are concerned about the security of their tenancies, if they have been asked to leave by their landlord, if there are repair issues or require some help with their housing situation, they can contact Citizens Advice for some expert housing advice. We’re delighted to be working with them to support private renters in the district.”

Karen Whitlam, CEO of Citizens Advice North Nottinghamshire, said: ‘’We’re proud to announce the official launch of the Citizens Advice Housing Team delivery at Mansfield Civic Centre this week, to address a much needed service for Mansfield residents. Please come along to meet our housing team with any privately rented housing queries.

“A huge thank you to Mansfield District Council for their incredible support in making this happen, and to everyone involved in its delivery, continuation, and development.’’

There are currently around 9,000 private renters in the Mansfield district, and around 2,000 landlords which will be directly impacted by the Renters Rights Bill. A key part of the bill is to remove a landlord’s ability to serve a Section 21 Notice to Quit without there being a significant reason to do so, such as rent arrears or anti-social behaviour.
