A new event at Mansfield Town Film Festival is giving filmmakers a chance to win over £1,000 towards their next short film, thanks to support from Mayor Andy Abrahams and local councillors.

Pitch Up!, taking place at 1pm on Saturday 27 July at Mansfield Palace Theatre, invites emerging filmmakers to pitch their next short film to a live panel of industry experts.

The winning pitch will receive a cash prize to bring their vision to life a significant boost for independent storytellers at the early stages of their careers.

The prize fund has already exceeded £1,000, made possible through a mix of personal and ward allowance contributions from the following councillors:

Craig Whitby, Sharron Hartshorn, Michael Abbs, Stuart Richardson, Charles Hammersley, Angie Jackson, Caroline Ellis, Paul Henshaw, John Coxhead, Sue Swinscoe, Diana McKenzie, Jane Beachus, Stephen North, Richard Tempest Mitchell, Charlotte Inkle, Jacob Denness and David Hughes, along with a contribution from Mayor Andy Abraham’s Mayor’s 500 Fund.

Mayor Abrahams, who will also present the prize during the Mansfield Film Awards on Sunday 28 July, said: “It’s so important that we invest in Mansfield’s creative future.

“Pitch Up is a fantastic example of how a town like ours can lead the way in supporting emerging artists. I’m proud to back this initiative and look forward to seeing the talent it uncovers.”

Now in its third year, Mansfield Town Film Festival has grown into Nottinghamshire’s largest celebration of short film, with over 120 films from across the world screening over three days from 25–27 July.

The festival has gained a reputation for championing working-class, diverse, and independent voices, while drawing industry guests and film lovers alike.

Festival Director Jay Martin added: “Pitch Up is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, and thanks to the incredible generosity of our councillors and Mayor, we’ve finally made it happen.

“It’s not only about financial support it’s about creating a platform for new ideas, new voices, and a genuine community of filmmakers. We’re so proud to launch it right here in Mansfield.”

Filmmakers interested in taking part can apply by emailing admin@mansfieldtownfilmfestival.com with a brief outline of their film idea and contact details. Each entrant will have five minutes to pitch their project live at the festival, with the support of a slide deck if they wish.
