Making a claim
To claim Council Tax Reduction you will need to complete a Council Tax Reduction application form.
Alternatively, you can pick up a form from the Civic Centre or call us and we will post one to you.
What is the Council Tax Reduction scheme?
Help with rent and Council Tax payments isn't just for people who are unemployed, sick, disabled or elderly and on a low pension. Many people who are working are also eligible for a reduction.
Whether you qualify will depend on a number of things:
- your household income
- the number of people in your family
- any savings you may have (the first £6,000 is ignored)
Under the new scheme, the maximum amount of Council Tax Reduction which can be awarded is 90% of your Council Tax bill. This means that everyone of working age now have to pay towards their Council Tax.
However, if you have reached the qualifying age for Pension Credit, the maximum amount of Council Tax Reduction which can be awarded is based on 100% of your Council Tax bill. The actual amount received is based on your personal circumstances. Contact the Pension Service for further details regarding the qualifying age for Pension Credit.
