What is Prevent?

Many lives have been lost to terrorist attacks in the UK, and even more people have been injured. Terrorism has a devastating impact on victims, their families and communities. Prevent is a national programme that aims to aims to stop people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.

It aims to protect communities against radicalising influences and to intervene early to ensure that people who are susceptible to radicalisation are offered appropriate interventions to help them move away from dangerous ideologies. Those who receive support from the programme do not leave it with a criminal record.

The programme also aims to tackle the ideological causes of terrorism and deals with any terrorist ideology. The most significant of these threats is currently from terrorist activity associated with Islamist extremism. Extreme right-wing ideology is a growing threat.

Prevent is delivered at a local level by experts who understand the risks in their communities. Partners include local authorities, police, education, healthcare and charities. Specified authorities, including local authorities like Mansfield District Council, are required, under section 29 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 201, to have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism. As such our officers work with partners to help deliver the aims of the Prevent programme.
