Mansfield Museum launches new Adopt a Piece of History scheme

objects history

Have you ever visited Mansfield Museum and found yourself drawn to a particular object? Perhaps you’ve wondered about its story, where it came from or what it can tell us about Mansfield’s past.

Now you can make a special connection with one of the Museum’s collections through our new Adopt a Piece of History scheme.

The scheme gives visitors the chance to adopt one of ten special objects from the Museum’s collection, while helping us care for the objects and continue sharing their stories with future generations.

There’s plenty to choose from. You could adopt the Egyptian nightjar, the first example of its kind ever recorded in Britain, or the enormous Irish Elk antlers, which stretch more than nine feet wide. For something closer to home, there’s a model of Mansfield’s original ‘Tin Tabernacle’ museum, a Mansfield Brewery sign, or safety equipment used by a miner at Sherwood Colliery.

The collection also includes a red K6 telephone box, a Westar 35mm film projector that once helped bring movies to audiences at The Granada, an 18th-century long-case clock made by Mansfield clockmaker Thomas Binch, a Sherwood Forest painting by local artist A. S. Buxton and a limited-edition ‘Babe Rainbow’ print by British Pop Art artist Sir Peter Blake, produced on tin plate in Mansfield.

There are three adoption levels available, starting at £15. Each comes with its own benefits, including an adoption certificate, information about your chosen object and an acknowledgement on the Museum website. Silver and Gold adoptions also include discounts in the Museum coffee shop and gift shop, while Gold adopters receive additional recognition and an exclusive collections tour for two.

Whether you choose an object because it reminds you of home, sparks a particular memory or simply because you love its story, an adoption is a chance to support Mansfield Museum while making a lasting connection with a piece of the collection.

Which piece of Mansfield’s history will you choose?
