Turn the page on childhood memories: Iconic Ladybird book exhibition comes to Mansfield Museum and Art Gallery

The Wonderful World of Ladybird Book Artists will run from Saturday 25 July to Saturday 21 November, offering visitors a fascinating journey into the history, artistry and enduring appeal of one of the nation's most treasured publishing brands.

The exhibition uncovers the story of the talented illustrators whose work helped make Ladybird books a fixture of childhood for generations of readers. Featuring an exceptional collection of vintage books, original artwork and artefacts, the exhibition shines a spotlight on the artists who played a crucial role in the company's extraordinary success throughout the 20th century.

Visitors will be able to explore the interconnected stories of the many illustrators who brought Ladybird books to life during the company's celebrated ‘golden years’ from 1940 to 1975. Rich in colour and detail, the exhibition reveals how these artists captured the world around them, creating illustrations that educated, inspired and entertained millions of children.

As well as showcasing rare artwork and memorabilia, the exhibition invites visitors to delve deeper into the stories behind the images. Who were the artists? What other work did they create? Who modelled for the illustrations and where were the real-life locations that inspired them? These are just some of the questions explored as the exhibition tells the remarkable story of a small Loughborough printing business that grew into a giant of children's publishing.

Curated by renowned Ladybird expert and collector Helen Day, the exhibition is the culmination of more than 20 years of research into the history of Ladybird Books and the artists who illustrated them. She has written extensively about Ladybird books for national newspapers, Royal Mail, the BBC and other media outlets, and regularly appears on radio and television discussing the books and her collection. Helen tells us:

"For many years now, I've been interested in the history of Ladybird books and in the artists who illustrated them. I began as a collector but my interest soon broadened into a desire to understand better the social history that the books contain. Ladybird books illustrated many childhoods and the Ladybird artists gave us an interpretation of the 20th century in bright colour and careful detail."

The exhibition offers something for all ages. Adults can relive treasured childhood memories while younger visitors discover the charm of these classic books for the first time. Hundreds of vintage Ladybird books will be available for visitors to browse, handle and share, creating a unique hands-on experience that celebrates the books' lasting legacy.

Families can also enjoy a special Ladybird-themed trail around the museum, encouraging children to explore the galleries while discovering hidden connections between the books and the museum's collections.

The Wonderful World of Ladybird Book Artists is free to visit at Mansfield Museum, which is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 3pm.
