Mansfield Museum celebrates local environmental champions with new Green Heroes exhibition
Green Heroes is a new photography exhibition celebrating the remarkable individuals, groups, schools, and organisations who are making Mansfield greener, cleaner, and more sustainable.
The exhibition is delivered as part of Mansfield District Council’s Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) funding, supporting the district’s commitment to culture, creativity, and community engagement.
The exhibition launches with a special opening night on Friday 12 December, between 6 and 8pm, and will be open to the public from Saturday 13 December 2025 until 21 February 2026.
The Green Heroes exhibition was created to honour the outstanding commitment shown by local community members in supporting Mansfield’s natural environment. From conservation volunteers and school eco-projects to neighbourhood litter pickers and wildlife protectors, the exhibition highlights a wide range of people dedicated to improving the district.
More than a celebration, Green Heroes provides a new opportunity for Mansfield Museum to build stronger connections with environmental groups across the district. The exhibition space is designed as a place for people to gather, network, learn from one another, and inspire collective action.
A dedicated selection panel made up of Christopher Neil - Cultural Services Manager, Mansfield District Council, Steve Little - Director, Greenwood Community Forest and Cllr Stuart Richardson - Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Skills, spent many hours reviewing public nominations to identify this year’s featured Green Heroes. Their final selection reflects the breadth, passion, and creativity of environmental work taking place across Mansfield.
All photography in the exhibition has been captured by Ian Dearman, Mansfield Museum’s Digital Culture Development Officer.
Green Heroes forms part of Mansfield Museum’s expanding programme of exhibitions exploring nature, sustainability, and local heritage. Current and upcoming exhibitions also include:
- A World of Birds - celebrating the Museum’s natural history collection
- My Favourite Tree (in development) - exploring residents’ emotional and historical connections to the district’s trees and referencing Mansfield’s place within the historic Sherwood Forest
Through this programme, Mansfield Museum aims to bring local communities together, amplify local voices, and highlight the positive changes being led by residents and grassroots groups.
Steve Little, Director of Greenwood Community Forest, told us:
“Green Heroes shines a spotlight on the incredible individuals and groups who give their time and energy to make Mansfield a greener, healthier place. Their dedication reminds us that real change starts at the community level. By sharing these stories, we hope to encourage even more people to get involved in protecting and enhancing our local environment”.
Cllr Stuart Richardson, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Skills, added:
“This wonderful exhibition is yet another example of the diverse and inspiring projects being delivered by our award-winning Cultural Services team at Mansfield Museum. Green Heroes shines a spotlight on the remarkable individuals and groups who are working tirelessly to make our district greener and more sustainable. It also reflects the Museum’s continued commitment to celebrating community pride, creativity, and the positive action taking place across Mansfield.”
Entry to see the exhibition is free and everyone is welcome. We look forward to welcoming you soon.
