Forgotten Objects: Rediscovering the overlooked at Mansfield Museum and Art Gallery
Mansfield Museum and Art Gallery invites visitors to uncover the hidden stories behind everyday artefacts in its new exhibition.
The Forgotten Objects exhibition is now open and available to view until Thursday 4 December. It shines a light on items long overlooked in storage, exploring their past significance and the human connections they represent.
Drawing from the museum’s own collections, Forgotten Objects reimagines what it means to preserve and value the ordinary. Each artefact, once commonplace or dismissed as obsolete, now takes centre stage - inviting audiences to reflect on memory, material culture, and the passage of time.
From household items to personal keepsakes, industrial relics to artistic curiosities, the exhibition offers a unique opportunity to see Mansfield’s heritage from a fresh perspective. Visitors are encouraged to share their own stories and interpretations, making Forgotten Objects a living conversation about what we choose to remember - and what we forget.
Dominic Hobson, National Portfolio Projects Assistant for Mansfield District Council’s Cultural Services team, said:
“Forgotten Objects is about rediscovery - not just of the artefacts themselves, but of the people, stories, and histories that give them meaning. These items might once have been considered insignificant, but together they reveal a powerful narrative about community, memory, and identity.”
The exhibition is part of the museum’s ongoing commitment to celebrating local history and encouraging public engagement with the collection. Special talks, creative workshops, and community-led events will accompany the display, offering opportunities for all ages to connect with Mansfield’s past in new and unexpected ways.
Mansfield Museum and Art Gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday between 10am and 3pm. Entry is free and everyone is invited to join us and see this special collection.
