MANSFIELD AS WE SEE IT
Mansfield District Council Cultural Services initiated an innovative digital art project that delved into the unique perspectives of young individuals on the autistic spectrum.
Collaborating with animation artist Sophie Johnson-Hill of SOJO Animation, participants from the Spectrum WASP group engaged in a series of nine workshops, exploring methods of expressing their interactions with Mansfield through their distinct viewpoints.
Throughout these workshops, Sophie guided the group in creating characters, using music and drawing as mediums to explore their emotions and experiences. The culmination of these ideas resulted in a 7-minute animated piece called "An Ordinary Day in Mansfield." This project, driven by the young participants, is both insightful and entertaining.
The project culminated in a red carpet screening event at Mansfield Palace Theatre. The animation has been included in an exhibition called "Better by Change" at Mansfield Museum, which explores disability. Additionally, the film has been selected for the Mansfield Town Film Festival and nominated for an award.
The project was produced by Ian Dearman as part of the council's National Portfolio Organisation funding from Arts Council England. This powerful voice for young individuals on the autistic spectrum in Mansfield creates a better understanding of autism while delivering an enjoyable and engaging animation.
