- How many pupils can we bring? Our sessions which are led by our staff are designed for up to 30 pupils. If you are organising a self-led visit, it may be possible for you to bring more or less pupils than this depending on what else is happening in the Museum that day. Please contact us directly so we can let you know how many it would be possible to bring.
- Can we make a provisional booking? Please complete the online booking enquiry form first with the dates which you would like to visit. Our Education Officer will then get in touch with you to say whether or not your preferred dates are available.
- Do you have a risk assessment which we can use? The answer is yes. You can download our specific risk assessments on the website. We recommend that you visit the museum before your trip to ensure you are familiar with the layout and the current exhibitions. If you have any questions while carrying out your pre-visit, please feel free to ask any of our team.
- How far in advance should we book? All of our sessions are very popular, and they get booked up quickly, so the sooner the better if you would like a specific date.
- How many adults should we bring with us? In order for work in the galleries and small group activities to run smoothly, as well as to ensure adequate lunch-time supervision. It is advisable that as a minimum there should be an adult:pupil ratio of 1:5 for Foundation Stage, 1:6 for Key Stage 1 and 1:8 for Key Stage 2. It is highly desirable that there is at least one female and one male adult present.
- How do we pay for our visit? We will send an invoice for your visit after the visit has taken place. Please ensure that the office email is included on your booking form so that we can send it direct. If you are organising a self-led session, you may wish to make a donation to the museum on the day.
- How can we prepare our students before we visit? You might like to take a look at the photos and video on our website which show a number of the different galleries within the museum. You may also want to mention that the things which we display within these galleries might have changed since we took the photos and so some areas may look slightly different. It is also important that your students are aware that there may be other members of the public around the museum during their visit.
- Where can our coach drop us off? The main drop-off point for coaches is outside the main entrance on Leeming street. If you are travelling in a minibus, there are a number of car parks nearby. You will find a map showing where these are in the visit section of our website.
- What time should we arrive at the museum? The museum opens to the public at 10am. We are happy for you to arrive from 9.45am. Please have your class divided into groups beforehand. On arrival, please come to the main entrance of the museum, where you will be met by a member of the team.
- Is there space for us to eat lunch and store our belongings? There are pegs available to hang coats in the corridor outside the Education room. Bags and lunch boxes can be stored in the Education room. If you are planning a self–led visit, we will be able to advise you about where you will be able to leave your belongings when you make your booking. It may not be possible to leave your belongings in the Education room as any groups taking part in our workshops will get priority within that area on that date.
- Where will we find the toilets? The toilets are next to our shop. Please ensure that you supervise children at all times and make sure they are suitable for other visitors after use.
- Is there a shop? Yes, we have a shop which sells many items including pocket money toys and souvenirs. If you would like your group to visit the shop during their visit, please let us know when making your booking and we can allow time for this. Alternatively, if you would like us to make up a souvenir bag with a set price, we would be happy to do this. Alternatively, if you would like to order our gift packs in advance, please mention this to us when making your booking.
- Can we take photos in the museum? We are more than happy for you to take photos during your visit to the museum. Please be aware that you don’t take photos of other members of public without their consent.
- What do we do if we need to cancel our visit? We understand that sometimes things happen and you might need to cancel or change a visit. We require a minimum of two weeks notice if you wish to cancel your visit. Should you wish to cancel after this date, you will be charged the full amount.
