How long does my adoption last?
Each adoption lasts for 12 months from the date of purchase. At the end of this period, you are welcome to adopt the same object again or choose a different piece of history.
Objects
Can I see my adopted object on display?
Our adopted objects are selected from Mansfield Museum's collections and are intended to be enjoyed by our visitors. However, objects may occasionally be removed from display for conservation, rotation or other operational reasons.
Is there a limit to how many people can adopt the same object?
No. Adoptions are not exclusive, which means the same object can be adopted by multiple supporters. Each adoption helps contribute towards the care and preservation of our collections.
Can I adopt more than one object?
Absolutely! You are welcome to adopt as many objects as you wish. Each adoption should be completed separately so that we can ensure you receive the correct certificate and object information.
Can I change my adopted object later?
Once your adoption has been completed, we are unable to transfer it to another object. However, you are welcome to make a new adoption for a different object at any time.
Do I own the object once I have adopted it?
No. Adopting a piece of history is a symbolic way of supporting Mansfield Museum. All objects remain part of the museum's collection and in the care of Mansfield Museum at all times.
Will I get special access to my adopted object?
We encourage you to visit the museum and enjoy your adopted object on display. Adoption does not include physical access to, or handling of, the object.
Gold adoptions do include a one-hour museum tour for two people, which will need to be arranged with the museum in advance.
How we thank you
What do I receive when I adopt an object?
All adopters receive a physical adoption certificate and an information pack about their chosen object.
Depending on your adoption level, you will also receive:
- Bronze – £15: Adoption certificate and object information pack.
- Silver – £30: Adoption certificate, object information pack and 10% off purchases in Perch & Brew and the Museum Shop.
- Gold – £100: Adoption certificate, object information pack, your name displayed alongside your adopted object and a one-hour museum tour for two people.
All adoptions last for 12 months.
How will I receive my certificate and information pack?
Your certificate and object information pack will be posted to you following your adoption.
Gold adopters will also be contacted by the museum to arrange their tour.
Can I have my name displayed next to my adopted object?
Name recognition alongside the object is included with Gold adoption (£100). Bronze and Silver adoptions do not include a name display.
Gifting
Can I adopt an object as a gift for someone else?
Yes! An adoption makes a thoughtful gift for anyone with an interest in history, Mansfield or the museum.
Please contact us at mansfieldmuseum@mansfield.gov.uk if you are arranging an adoption as a gift, so we can help with the certificate and delivery arrangements.
Can I have the certificate sent directly to the gift recipient?
Please contact us before completing your adoption if you would like the certificate and information pack sent directly to someone else.
Can I choose a future date for a gift adoption?
Adoptions are processed when purchased. If you are planning to give the adoption on a particular date, we recommend allowing time for the certificate and information pack to arrive.

Providing the resources needed to care for and protect our collections, ensuring objects are stored and looked after appropriately.
Conservation and repair
Supporting essential conservation work, repairs and specialist treatments to help prevent deterioration and preserve objects for the future.
Maintenance and preservation
Helping us maintain the condition of our collections and address the ongoing practical costs involved in looking after historic objects.
Protecting Mansfield's history
Every object in our collection has a story to tell. Your adoption helps us safeguard these pieces of local history so they can be enjoyed and appreciated by future generations.
Every adoption, whatever the level, makes a valuable contribution to the ongoing care of our collections.
Payment and adoption levels
What are the adoption levels?
There are three adoption levels:
- Bronze – £15
- Silver – £30
- Gold – £100
Each adoption lasts for 12 months. The benefits included with each level are outlined above.
Are the adoption payments monthly?
No. Adopt a Piece of History is a one-off payment for a 12-month adoption. There are no ongoing monthly payments.
Will my adoption automatically renew?
No. Your adoption will end after 12 months and will not automatically renew. You are welcome to adopt the same object or another object again if you wish to continue your support.
Can I adopt another object when my adoption ends?
Of course! You can renew your support by making a new adoption, choosing either the same object or a different piece of history.
Can I cancel my adoption?
As adoptions are made as a one-off payment rather than a recurring subscription, there is no ongoing payment to cancel. If you have a query about a recent adoption, please contact us at mansfieldmuseum@mansfield.gov.uk.
