A Celtic Christmas promises a sleigh-full of musical enchantment
Get into the Christmas spirit early as acclaimed West End and folk musicians bring a magical blend of traditional festive favourites and Celtic charm to Mansfield for the first time.
Mansfield Palace Theatre is delighted to welcome A Celtic Christmas on Wednesday 11 November, as the acclaimed touring production brings its unique blend of festive favourites, traditional folk music and Celtic magic to town for the very first time.
Following a run of sell-out performances across the country, this enchanting concert promises to be a festive treat, combining much-loved Christmas classics with the rich musical heritage of Celtic tradition. Audiences can expect soaring vocals, captivating musicianship and fresh arrangements of the timeless songs that make Christmas so special.
Taking centre stage is charismatic concert soprano, show creator and producer Caitlin Downie, joined by actress, dancer and virtuoso vocalist Elspeth Day-Collins, whose recent performances include appearances at The Lowry and The Other Palace.
The talented line-up also features acclaimed accordionist and Musical Director Áine McLoughlin, returning for her second year with the production. Her impressive credits include Cabaret at London's Kit Kat Club and The Wish Thief at the Royal Opera House.
Completing the ensemble are violinist Josh Newman, a familiar face on the UK's folk music scene who released his solo album From the Floor in 2023, and guitarist Tom Palmer, whose energetic performances with ceilidh bands and the touring show Lipstick on Your Collar regularly get audiences on their feet.
Drawing on centuries-old songs passed down through generations, A Celtic Christmas gives traditional festive music a distinctive twist. Beloved classics including Joy to the World and The Holly and the Ivy are reimagined with the enchanting sounds and musical mythology of Celtic tradition, creating a heartwarming celebration of Christmas through music.
What began as a grassroots production in village halls has grown into a successful national touring show, delighting audiences with its authentic festive spirit and fresh take on seasonal favourites.
Reflecting on the show's journey, creator and producer Caitlin Downie said: “When I set out to create A Celtic Christmas in 2015, I wanted to give audiences an alternative ‘Christmas starts here’ show with an enchanting and authentic Christmas spirit at its core.
“We discovered the meaning of Christmas in reliving the comfort and joy of its traditional songs and making new arrangements the audience will enjoy. We are delighted to unwrap and perform our captivating Christmas show for you in Mansfield for the very first time.”
Whether you're a lover of traditional Christmas music, Celtic culture or simply looking to get into the festive spirit, A Celtic Christmas promises an uplifting evening of music, warmth and seasonal wonder.
