This Week’s Film: Lucian Freud: A Self Portrait

For the first time in history, the Royal Academy of Arts in London and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston bring together over 50 of Freud’s self-portraits in one landmark exhibition. Spanning nearly seven decades, these paintings, prints, and drawings reveal Freud’s uncompromising vision of himself – both as an artist and as a man.

From his earliest portrait in 1939 to his final work completed 64 years later, Freud’s self-portraits trace the evolution of his style, his psyche, and his relentless exploration of the act of looking. Together, they form a profound and intimate chronicle of ageing, self-examination, and artistic struggle.

This cinematic journey offers an engrossing study of Freud’s life and work, reflecting his belief that art was inseparable from the intense act of observation.
