This Week’s Film: Van Gogh & Japan

“I envy the Japanese,” Van Gogh once wrote to his brother Theo. Though he never visited Japan, it was the country that had the most profound influence on his art. This remarkable film, based on the Van Gogh & Japan exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, reveals how Japanese prints and aesthetics reshaped not only Van Gogh’s work but also that of his contemporaries, including Monet and Degas.

Through rare access to world-class collections, the documentary follows Van Gogh’s journey – from discovering Japanese prints in Paris, to weaving their influence into his own style, and finally to the south of France, which he imagined as his own version of Japan. The film also travels to Japan itself, uncovering the enduring cultural exchange that defined Van Gogh’s evolution into a modern master.
