Plan ahead for Torch Relay celebrations

It's just one week until the Olympic torch comes to Mansfield and people are being urged to plan ahead and allow plenty of time to make the most of the celebrations to mark the visit of the Olympic Torch to Mansfield.

Mansfield District Council is working with Nottinghamshire Police and Nottinghamshire County Council, as well as LOCOG (the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games), ahead of the Torch's arrival to the District on Thursday 28 June.

Olympic Torch Relay

The Torch visits Mansfield on day 41 of the national Torch Relay event as it continues on its 70 day journey towards the Olympic Stadium for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics in July.

Key advice includes:

Residents and businesses directly affected by the Torch Relay have been sent letters about road closures and parking restrictions. Road signs advising of closures and delays on the route are also now in place.

A handy guide to the Olympic Torch Relay's visit to Mansfield is now available in Mansfield District Council's offices, leisure centres, museum, Palace Theatre and community buildings. You'll also find them in libraries and major supermarkets across the District. The leaflet contains helpful information on the timings of the relay through the streets of the District, details of road closures, the names of the Torchbearers, car park and toilet locations, along with an illustrated map.

Executive Mayor Tony Egginton, said: "This is a once in a life time experience and we have been busy planning with our partners to ensure as many people as possible can see the Olympic Torch in Mansfield and make it a day to remember.

"The advice for anyone planning to watch the relay and cheer on the torch bearers is to get to your chosen vantage point in good time and consider how you intend to travel there. Parking will inevitably be limited in those areas where the torch bearers will be running, and there will be delays on some roads to allow the torch convoy to pass through. Please note the road closure times in your area, so that you can plan your journey or any other activities with the least possible disruption."
