Inspirational Torchbearer Steve Grainger
Stephen Grainger MBE, 46, from Mansfield has been confirmed as one of the inspirational Olympic torchbearers who will be carrying the flame through the Mansfield District on 28 June.
Steve was nominated by Lloyds TSB to become one of the lucky 8,000 people to carry the flame along its journey to London, ahead of the Olympic games.
Previously the CEO of the Youth Sport Trust (YST), Steve worked with Lloyds TSB to create National School Sport Week - a key element of their Olympic activation programme which has engaged over 12,000 schools nationally.
In 2007 Steve was awarded an MBE for services to school sport.
Steve is now the Rugby Development Director at the Rugby Football Union (RFU) and is actively involved with Mansfield Harriers Athletics club.
Steve moved to Mansfield in 1987 to take up his first job, as Athletics Manager at Mansfield District Council before moving to Nottinghamshire County Council. Despite working nationally since 1992, he has stayed living in Mansfield and now spends about half of his week away as he is based at Twickenham.
Steve said: "Seeing the Olympic games in our country will be a once in a lifetime experience and to be part of the very few who get to play a role within the games is amazing. It's a fantastic opportunity to get involved in one of the biggest events in the world."
He is looking forward to watching the athletics competitions and is especially looking forward to seeing Rebecca Adlington compete, as he had been in the poolside audience when she won her second gold medal at the Beijing 2008 games.
