The commitment and dedication of Mansfield's unsung heroes was recognised at the 2012 Mansfield Volunteer Awards last week.

Dawn Mead and Adam Thompson volunteers

The Mansfield Volunteer Awards evening was held on Friday 25 May to celebrate the achievement of volunteers in the Mansfield District. The Awards are organised by a steering group of tenants and residents, with support from officers from the Mansfield Community and Voluntary Service (CVS), Mansfield District Council and Ladybrook Enterprises.

The evening was held at Ladybrook Community Centre where the winners of the awards, the people that nominated them and guests were in attendance.

Mick Beresford, Chair of the Mansfield Volunteer Awards committee said: "It was a fabulous evening and really humbling to hear all the stories about how much time local people put into their communities because they care. The winners of the awards are all terrific and help make a real difference."

The winners of the six categories were:

Andy Wallace Memorial Award - Ian Gregory from Bull Farm Football Club

Ian started the Bull Farm Football Club over four years ago by realising a need to get young people in the area interested in something positive and aiming to provide help and support to his community.

Margaret Wilson Memorial Award - Roy Pierce from Hetty's

Roy has volunteered at Hetty's for the last three years. He works tirelessly and effortlessly by recruiting, supporting, motivating and supervising other volunteers.

Emily Dawes Memorial Award - Joyshna Ravat from Navi Saheli

Joyshna works at Navi Saheli, which is part of the North Nottinghamshire Asian Women's Organisation. She has been there since 1988 and is the lynch-pin of the group.

Under 18's Award - Adam Thompson from Mansfield Woodhouse Children's Centre

Adam is a fantastic role model in the Mansfield Woodhouse Children's Centre for both the children and the parents and is an asset to the organisation.

Community Group Award - Steve & Joyce Cree from 10th Mansfield Scout Group

Steve and Joyce have worked tirelessly in their local community for over 10 years to run the 10th Mansfield Scout Group and have made a real positive difference to the lives of many children.

Outstanding Volunteer Award - Barbara Belford

Barbara sadly passed away earlier this year, but her memory lives on. She volunteered and helped to support Barrowhill Community Link and the Oak Tree Safe environmental group on the Oak Tree estate, spending much of her time helping the local community to make a positive difference in the area.
