Christmas Lights Switch on 2010

Mansfield is set for a spectacular night to remember as the Christmas lights switch-on begins the official countdown to the festive season this Thursday, 18 November (5.30-7pm) in Mansfield Market Place.

Headline act Chesney Hawkes

The premiere of the video to Mansfield's very own Christmas song - Because it's Christmas in Mansfield – which features the voices of local school children, Mansfield Town players and town centre shop staff among others – will start the event off at 5.30pm.

The one and only Chesney Hawkes– the man behind one of the biggest hit singles of the 90s – is the headline act at this year's event.

Chesney stormed to the top of the UK singles chart in 1991 with The One and Only, selling 600,000 copies in this country and making the top ten in America.

There will be a chance to boo and hiss the evil Captain Hook – alias Coronation Street and Bad Girls villain Jack Ellis– who will join fellow stars from this year's Palace Theatre pantomime, Peter Pan on stage. And costumed characters from kids animated favourite Ben and Holly's Little Kingdom will also appear.

Glam Jam – a tribute to renowned 70s rockers Slade – will perform the festive anthem Merry Christmas Everybody and there will be a special appearance from Tinkerbell and Santa Claus on the Town Hall balcony.

And things are bound to be all-white on the night as a snow machine covers the crowds in the first flurry of the winter. Following the lights switch-on itself at 6.55pm, there will be a fantastic fireworks finale.

Autograph hunters can meet and greet and stars from the event at Debenhams in the Four Seasons Shopping Centre from 7.30 to 8.30pm.

The Christmas Lights switch-on marks the start of late-night Thursday shopping in Mansfield town centre on the run-up to Christmas, with many shops open until 9pm.

The FREE event has been organised by the Mansfield Christmas Lights Committee, which includes Mansfield District Council, the Four Seasons Shopping Centre and local businesses.

Mansfield District Council's Executive Mayor Tony Egginton said: "Mansfield is building a tradition for putting on a great switch-on event and some spectacular Christmas lights – I'm sure this year will be no exception.

"The Christmas Lights Switch-on is always a personal highlight of the year for me – it's an opportunity for people from our district and beyond to come together and celebrate the official start of the countdown to Christmas."
