Council Tax Reduction Scheme

These pages aim to help customers understand the Council Tax Reduction scheme. It is intended as a general guide, for more detailed individual advice please contact us on 01623 463463 (option 2).

Council Tax Reduction can help pay towards some or all of your Council Tax bill if you are on a low income, even if you own your own home and whether or not you work.

Checking Your Entitlement

You can calculate your estimated Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction entitlement by using our on-line Benefits Calculator.

The results of your calculation should only be taken as an estimate based on the information you have supplied.  If you think that you may be entitled to help, you should submit a claim as soon as possible and receive a formal assessment of your entitlement.

Making a Claim

To claim Council Tax Reduction you will need to complete a Council Tax Reduction Application Form.  These are available from the related media section on the right hand side of the screen.

Alternatively, they can be picked up from the Civic Centre or please telephone us and we will post one to you.

For more information on Council Tax Reduction, please see the related pages section on the right of the screen.

Important changes to Council Tax Benefit from 1st April 2013

Council Tax Benefit will be abolished from 1st April 2013. Every authority will have to provide it's own scheme and Mansfield District Council will be operating it's own local Council Tax Reduction Scheme from 1st April 2013 to take the place of Council Tax Benefit.

Under Council Tax Benefit the maximum amount of Council Tax Reduction which can be awarded is 91.5% of the Council Tax liability. This means that anyone who does not have anything to pay towards their Council Tax at present will have a small amount to pay from 1st April 2013.

Persons over the age of 61 who have reached the qualifying age for guarantee pension credits will be protected from the changes and will still continue to receive the maximum help available.

This does not mean you will be protected from the age of 61, the table below provides examples of the date you will be protected from and is shown in the column on the right side.

If you need further clarification on the qualifying age for guarantee pension credits please contact the Pension Service or visit the DirectGov website.

However, if there are changes to your circumstances around this date you may have to complete a new application form. if this happens we will send you one through the post.

To apply for Council Tax Reduction you will need to complete an application form which will be available from the Civic Centre or by phoning the Benefits Section on 01623 463463 (and choose option 2). Alternatively you can also download the application form from this web site.
