Swimmers break world records!
Friday 23rd November 2007
The Mansfield Nova Swim Squad has been in excellent form recently, breaking British, European and World records.
Sam Hynd and Callum Lawson were competing at the Disability Sport England National Short Course Championships in Sheffield on 3rd and 4th November, and did not disappoint.
Sam took seven gold medals, breaking three S8 Category World Records, three European, and a staggering eight British records. The World and European records came in his preferred 400m freestyle, where he set an incredible time of 4.27 minutes. In the process of the 400m, he also set a new World record at the 200m mark.
As well as this, Sam set a World record in the S8 200m individual medley. He also set British records in the 100 freestyle twice and 50m breaststroke - a fantastic weekend for the 16 year old. Sam will now set his hopes on the trials for the Olympics next year, and then hopefully his sights will turn to Beijing.
Callum Lawson returned after recovering from a recent operation and showed good form, taking the silver in the S9 category 100m breaststroke and bronze medals in the 100m backstroke and 200m individual medley. These performances show that Callum is making progress on his way back to fitness and should give him some confidence in the months leading up to the Olympic trials next year.
The Midland Short Course Championships took place over the same weekend at Braunstone Leisure Centre in Leicester. The squad came home with five golds, one silver and three bronze medals.
Daniel Mills (16yrs) took two gold medals in the senior men's 400m freestyle and 800m freestyle, and took a bronze in the 200m freestyle. His performance in the 800m freestyle smashed the senior and junior Nottinghamshire County record and his 200m freestyle was also a junior county record.
Alice Thomas (15yrs) also had an excellent weekend taking the Junior gold medals in the women's 50m and 200m breaststroke and a silver in the junior women's 100m breaststroke.
Team mate Katie Gilles (14yrs) took a junior silver behind Alice in the 200m breaststroke and a bronze medal in the 50m event. Dean Davenport had a good men's 200m butterfly to take the junior bronze, in a new personal best time.
Barney Barlow 5th mens senior 200m butterfly and 8th mens senior 800m freestyle.
Grant Cashmore 7th mens senior 50m breaststroke.
