Mapping and GIS FAQ

FAQ's

Q. Do I need a high-speed Internet connection?

A. No. But the GIS delivers a lot of information to your computer. If you are not using a high-speed (broadband) connection, you may find the map and your requested information takes a few minutes to appear.

Please be patient, and remember that each time you click on a search, the system restarts the search. So clicking on the same search request more than once will not speed up the results. A symbol will appear on the screen while the database is retrieving results, so you will know that your search is in progress.

Q.  Do the maps show land ownership?

A. No all boundaries are indicative only. Any enquiries on land ownership should be directed to Land Registry www.landreg.gov.uk

Q.  Can I download maps for use in my Building Control or Planning Application?

A.  No. All maps contained in the web site are subject to Ordnance Survey Copyright. Maps for this purpose can be obtained from an Ordnance Survey Agent.  www.ordnancesurvey.gov.uk.

Q. Can I print the maps showing my data?

A. You are permitted to make a single copy for personal use. However, you must not copy or otherwise reproduce or download this data for any other purpose. Anyone wishing to use the mapping data herein for their own use must make their own separate arrangements with Ordnance Survey.

Q. What are the system requirements?

A. The minimum system requirements for using the maps are Internet Explorer 5.0 or above and Javascript. We recommend a minimum screen resolution of 1024 x 768.

Q. Why does the mapping not show?

A. Depending on the specification and age of your computer, you may get a message telling you that you need a more recent version of Java to use the on-line system. Or you may find that the on-line map does not appear on your screen. In either event, you can download an updated version of Java from their main website.

Q. Why do the screen windows not open?

A. Some search results open in a separate window. If you are using a firewall with a pop-up blocker, you may be asked by your firewall if you want to allow pop-ups from this site. You will need to click 'yes' or 'ok'. If your firewall does not ask you if you want to allow pop-ups, you will need to switch off the 'pop-up blocking' option in the firewall settings. This is normally very straightforward.
