General Screen Layout
For ease of use, the screen is divided into three principal areas; a Top or Main Menu Frame with navigation buttons (1) giving access to the major elements of the Plan; a Left Frame (2) which gives access to the Map Index in the Proposals and Inset Maps or the Contents and Chapter headings in the Written Statement; and a central Content Frame where Map tiles or Written Statement text can be viewed.

Using the Proposals Map
The Maps replicate the printed versions which can be of large size in their hard copy format.  The maps are too large to be shown in full on screen, so to enable the user to read the maps easily and be able to receive them at the browser quickly, they are divided into sections or tiles.  The user can choose a tile to view from the Location Map which appears when the appropriate button is selected.  The user can move the mouse pointer over the Location Map and whenever the mouse pointer changes to the hand icon with its finger pointing, the area is active.  The green line grid shows the individual map tiles that can be selected.
The Map Key will open in a new browser window and can be re-sized and positioned to allow the user to easily identify colours and symbols that are used on the maps.

Once the user has selected a map tile, the browser will automatically add scroll bars if the user's monitor is too small to view the whole tile.

If the user has chosen an incorrect tile or he wants to move to an adjacent tile, he can use the Map Index (3) at the top of the left frame to view any of the tiled images.  Alternatively, the user can revert to the Location Map by using the Back button on the browser toolbar and choose another tile.

Where Policies are shown on the Map, these are linked directly to the Written Statement Policy text. Use the Back button to revert to the Map image.

Finding a Policy
The Policy Numbers shown on the Map tiles (4) are active and the user can go to the related Policy text in the Written Statement by clicking on the Policy Number.

The Policy text will appear and replace the Map tile.  To return to the Maps, the user can either use the 'Back' button which will return the user to the Map tile or click the Location Map button.  If the user wishes to remain in the Written Statement, the 'Written Statement' button can be used.

Using the Written Statement
The Written Statement is a comprehensive text document describing the Local Plan and the Policies related to it.  The user finds the Written Statement from the button on the Main Menu Top Frame and is presented with the Introduction in the Content Frame and a list of chapter headings in the Left Frame.  Chapters and other sections can be found by clicking on the relevant item from the listing in the Left Frame.  When navigating in the Written Statement, the chapter heading list remains in the Left Frame to help the user move quickly within the Written Statement.

Using the Inset Maps
Certain specified areas are shown on larger scale maps called Insets.  The user can select an inset by either clicking over the relevant small rectangular boxed areas on the Location Map, by selecting the appropriate area from a Proposals Map tile or by clicking the Inset Maps button on the Main Menu at the Top Frame and choosing from the list of names.

Navigation from tile to tile is similar to the Proposals Map, where a Map tile is selected from the Map Index.
