The Super Council and you

Over the past few weeks I have received many emails about the proposal for Nottinghamshire to become a Unitary Authority. It's no secret that district councils across the county are calling for full consultation over the 'super council' model and we want to see a robust business model before making any decisions.

My objections are not to protect the jobs of the Mansfield District Council Executive, staff or councillors, it is to protect the opportunity to make decisions and deliver services locally. It is very likely that local priorities will not make county-wide policy if a super council is created.

Whether you love or hate your local council - and let's face it, it really is a Marmite situation - the heart of the matter is that district and borough councils are closer to communities and we are better able to serve local needs. What is important to all Councillors of Mansfield district regardless of political parties, is that we do our job to serve the people that live and work here.

Mansfield District Council has lead the way and we're being used as an example of best practice across the country. Last week you will have read in this paper about the ASSIST service which helps people return home quickly and safely from hospital - housing officers at MDC developed this project with partners. It has saved the tax payer over £1.4m so far! There are plenty more examples including the emerging successes of the housing company and the work of our housing team to ensure that homes are provided that meet the changing demands of our community. Our commitment to providing houses to support independent living and senior persons shared ownership are all shining examples of adapting to what you need now and in the future. We are also undergoing a programme of change to reduce costs, increase efficiency and bring forward digital and automated services.
