Education and promotion

Making sure food sold within the district is safe to eat is an important duty of the Food, Health and Safety team. The team also handles issues such as food poisoning, infectious diseases and education.

Food business registration

All businesses who store, prepare, sell, distribute or otherwise handle food must register with their local authority. This applies to businesses based in either fixed or mobile premises. New businesses must register at least 28 days before opening.

Food safety inspections

Food safety inspections of businesses in the district are carried out on a regular basis. While the focus of these inspections is to make sure businesses comply with food safety law, we always try to work with and support businesses wherever possible. We will however always take appropriate legal action if serious breaches of food safety law are found and public safety is put at risk.

Food hygiene ratings scheme

We are part of the national food hygiene ratings scheme. The scheme (formerly known as scores on the doors) shows how a food business performed during their last food safety inspection.

We offer further information on the ratings scheme, and you can look up what scores food businesses have been awarded on the food hygiene rating scheme website.

Food complaints

If you have experienced a food safety problem or have come across unsafe practices in a food business within the district, then you can submit a complaint to us.

We will investigate complaints about food where there is a serious risk of ill health or injury. Please see our pdf icon guidance document [400kb] about some common food complaints which do not cause a serious risk of ill health or injury and advice on the best course of action to take.

To make a complaint, please complete our online form or Environmental health.

Education and promotion

As well as enforcement of food safety laws, we also work to educate and promote food safety for both the public and businesses.

We regularly participate in campaigns and promotions such as national Food Safety Week. If you would like to know more, please contact us.
