Report a change in circumstances

You need to tell us of any changes in your income and family circumstances which could affect your entitlement.

What sort of changes do I need to report?

You must tell us straight away about any changes in circumstances for you, your partner, any dependant children or any non-dependant who lives with you.

Some examples of the changes we need to know about are:

  • If your wages or salary change.
  • If any benefits you receive increase, decrease or stop.
  • If your private pension changes.
  • If your savings change.
  • If any other income you receive changes.
  • If children or other adults leave or move into your home.
  • The income of other adults in your home changes.
  • If you start or stop receiving Income Support or Job Seekers Allowance.
  • If you start to receive Working Family Tax Credit.
  • If you or your partner move house, even if this move is temporary.
  • If your rent changes (private tenant only).

This list can't cover everything. If you don't know if a change in your circumstances will alter your benefit, tell us anyway.

It is important to tell us about changes in your circumstances immediately as you could be overpaid benefit which you will have to pay back.

Are there time limits for reporting a change?

If your circumstances change and the change results in you receiving more benefit, you must report the change within one month of it happening.  If you don't, we will only re-calculate your entitlement for the Monday following the date you actually report the change. This means that you will lose out on benefit you could have been entitled to.

If your circumstances change and which results in you receiving less benefit you must still report the change immediately. We will recalculate your entitlement from the Monday following the date of the change and an overpayment will be calculated which you will have to repay. If you are not sure what changes to tell us about, or what proof to send, just ask.

Report a change in circumstances

You will need to write in to us to advise of the changes. We cannot accept notification of the change via e mail or over the phone. If you do phone us to ask for advice regarding a change the member of staff will take the details from you and also ask you to confirm the changes in writing.
