When are they held?

The European Parliament is elected for a fixed term of five years. The next European election will be held in 2019.

There are six MEPs who represent the East Midlands region.

The voting system

Each voter has one vote.

Each party puts forward a list of candidates called a regional list and you vote for one of these lists or an individual candidate standing as an Independent.

The number of MEPs that are elected from each party to represent a region depends on the overall share of the vote that party receives.
