Eligibility criteria

You must also ensure that:

  • At least one person (e.g. the owner of the business) must be suitably qualified in animal care and welfare.
  • Animals will be kept in suitable accommodation (temperature, size, lighting, ventilation and cleanliness)
  • Adequate food and drink will be provided to the animals and they will be visited at suitable intervals.
  • Any animals (that are mammals) will not be sold too young
  • Steps are taken to prevent the spread of infectious  diseases, and
  • Adequate fire and emergency provisions are in place.

Apply for a licence

An pdf icon application fee [210kb] must be paid when you make your application.

We will confirm that we have received both your application and fee in writing and arrange to carry out an inspection of your premises.

A licence for a new business will not be issued until the premises have been inspected by us and will need to be revisited when stocked.

A licence, if granted, will be subject to the standard pdf icon licence conditions [76kb].

Licence expiry

Licences expire on the 31 December and must be renewed each year before that date.

Complaints

Any complaints regarding the welfare of the pet animals are thoroughly investigated. We have a working relationship with the RSPCA and we share information on complaints.
