Council Tenants

Small extensions or alterations to homes may not require planning permission.

Do I need planning permission?

To assess whether your proposal needs planning permission you can visit the planning portal's do I need planning permission page. Alternatively you can complete and submit our pdf icon Householder enquiry form [392kb] .

What we will do

We will assess your householder enquiry and will confirm in writing that the proposal you have submitted does or does not require planning permission. If you do not require permission this response can then be used as evidence if you sell your house.

Cost

Please see our pdf icon Planning and building control fees and charges [36kb] for the cost of submitting a householder enquiry.

Before you submit an application

Before you submit a planning application, we would encourage you contact us for pre-application advice.

While we will normally write to your neighbours about your planning application, we recommend that you talk to your neighbours prior to submitting any application.

Guidance on extending your property

We have produced best practice guidance with regard to extending domestic property, this is summarised in our pdf icon extension to dwellings guidance [2Mb].

Council Tenants

Council Tenants need to be aware that as stated in the Tenancy Conditions, all Council tenants must ask permission from their Landlord for any alterations, whether or not they require or do not require planning or building control permission.  No alterations or work must be started until a letter is received from the Landlord giving written permission to carry out the work.
