Further information

Council Tax Reduction can help pay towards some or all of your Council Tax bill if you are on a low income, even if you own your own home and whether or not you work.

Checking your entitlement

You can calculate your estimated Council Tax Reduction and Housing Benefit entitlement by using our online benefits calculator.

The results of your calculation should only be taken as an estimate based on the information you have supplied.  If you think that you may be entitled to help, you should submit a claim as soon as possible and receive a formal assessment of your entitlement.

Making a claim

To claim Council Tax Reduction you will need to complete a pdf icon Council Tax Reduction application form [1Mb].

Alternatively, you can pick up a form from the Civic Centre or call us and we will post one to you.

More about the Council Tax Reduction scheme

The Council Tax Reduction scheme replaced the previous Council Tax Benefit scheme from 1 April 2013.

Under the new scheme, the maximum amount of Council Tax Reduction which can be awarded is 90% of your Council Tax bill. This means that everyone of working age now have to pay towards their Council Tax.

However, if you receive state retirement pension or have reached the qualifying age for guarantee pension credits, you will still receive 100% reduction. Contact the Pension Service for further details.
